What's New? - Our 2012 Spring Exhibition on " Redditch Remembered" is to be held on May 19th & 20th at St. Steven's.

Members of the Redditch History & Heritage Group not only collect and promote artefacts showing Redditch’s past but are concerned with the preservation of the History & Heritage that remains in the town today.

We therefore will initiate, run and support campaigns to resist changes to the towns infrastructure which threaten to destroy our past.

Here are some of the topics which are currently supporting.

Church Green Redevelopment : We are hearing reports that as part of the redevelopment of St. Stephen’s Church changes are planned to Church Green including re-siting of the Bandstand and increased off-road parking.

We don’t know how far advanced these plans are and believe a consultation document will be issued, but in principle we are opposed to any changes in this area of the town.

St. Stephen’s Church Organ: Again early information suggests that the organ within St. Stephen’s Church will be replaced as part of its redevelopment. This we feel this would be a retrograde move.

St. George’s Church: The falling congregation at St. George’s Church have put the future of this building at risk. We are monitoring events and would support any actions to ensure preservation of the building.

50 Year New Town Celebrations: In a few years time it will be 50 years since Redditch was designated as a New Time. We are supporting the principle that the town should celebrate this milestone.

Redditch Museum: It has be a long held belief by the groups Historians that a town the size of Redditch should have a museum depicting the towns history. We have the excellent Forge Mill Needle Museum and Bordesley Abbey Visitors center which address some of the key aspects of our history but there is more areas to cover. A Redditch Museum would cover all aspects of the town’s history and is the long term aim of the group.

We know how costly and resource demanding such an undertaking would be, particularly in the current economic climate, but firmly believe it should be a long term aim.

If you support any of the above please contact us.

If you now of other topics which you feel the group should support, please let us know.
